I'm still a kid. I'm like six years old. But it's just a matter of wanting to get up, it's just a big journey. I felt like when I left home that I was on a journey, and I still am.

20 Actors and Actresses Who Turned Down Important or Popular Roles

1. Molly Ringwald - Molly Ringwald turned down the role of Vivian in “Pretty Woman” and the role of Molly in “Ghost” among others. She was also offered a part in Scream which she turned down because she was in her late 20’s and didn’t want a teenage role. Also, she was offered Leah Thompson’s role in “Some Kind of Wonderful” which she turned down severing her relationship with John Hughes. Personally, I can’t see her in any of those roles and never felt she was all that great of an actress anyway. She’s good with whiny roles, however. I’ll give her that.

2. Mel Gibson - Turned down the lead role in Gladiator. A role which landed Russell Crowe the Academy Award. Mel also turned down the part of Robin Hood in “Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.” Instead, that part went to a not very belieaveable Kevin Costner.

3. Alec Baldwin - The role of Richard Kimball in “The Fugitive” was originally offered to Alec. After he turned it down, it went to Harrison Ford.

4. Sigourney Weaver - Turned down the role of Ada in “The Accused,” a part that later went to Kelly McGillis, and the lead role in “A Handmaid’s Tale.”

5. Keanu Reeves - turned down Charlie Sheen’s role in “Platoon.” And really, thank goodness for that. The role should definitely go to someone who can act.

6. Gillian Anderson - The former X-Files star was originally offered the role of Bethany Sloane in “Dogma.” She said, “no thanks” and the part wen to Linda Fiorentino instead.

7. Warren Beatty - Turned down the role of Jack Horner in “Boogie Nights.” The part was then offered to a smarmy looking Burt Reynolds. Warren also turned down James Caan’s role in “Misery”, the part of Gordon Gekko in “Wall Street” and Robert Redford’s role in “The Sting.” Granted, Warren’s had some decent roles and he’s a good actor. But we’re thinking he’s not a very good judge of a good script. He accepts “Dick Tracy” and turns down “The Sting?” Does anyone else see something wrong with this picture?

8. Melanie Griffith - Melanie Griffith turned down the role of “Thelma” in “Thelma and Louise.” Incidentally, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jodie Foster were originally cast as Thelma and Louise but had to drop out as pre-production dragged on.

9. Sarah Michelle Gellar - Scheduling conflicts prevented her from accepting the role as Cher in “Clueless.”

10. Richard Grieco - The “21 Jump Street” star turned down the lead role in “Speed” because he thought the script sucked. I guess he’s still turning down sucky scripts because it’s not like we’ve seen him in anything but the plastic surgeon’s office since the early 90’s.

11. Madonna - I guess we should be thankful but Madonna turned down Michelle Pfeiffer’s role in “The Fabulous Baker Boys.”

12. Denzel Washington - Turned down the role of Curtis in “Dreamgirls”, the lead in “I Robot”, and it’s rumored he turned down the role of “Ray Charles” in Ray.

13. Will Smith - Turned down the role that eventually went to Keanu Reeve in “The Matrix”, and the role of Stu in “Phone Booth.”

14. Julia Roberts - Turned down Sharon Stone’s leg crossing role in “Basic Instinct,” the role of Mary Corleone in “Godfather III” the role of Annie in “Sleepless in Seattle,” the lead role of “Shakespeare in Love” and the role of Lucy in “While You Were Sleeping.”

15. Leonardo DiCaprio - Offered the part of Dirk Diggler in “Boogie Nights” before it was given to Mark Wahlberg and the lead role in “The Matrix”.

16. Mark Wahlberg - Turned down the role of Linus in “Ocean’s 11″.

17. Tom Cruise - Before Johnny Depp made the role his own, Tom Cruise signed on to play Donnie Brasco in the film of the same name. Tom was also to play the lead role in “Footloose” and ended up turning that down as well.

18. Jennifer Jason Leigh - Jennifer Jason Leigh is another of the actresses who landed the role of Vivian in “Pretty Woman” and later turned it down.

19. John Travolata - Turned down the role of Forrest Gump.

20. Tom Hanks - Turned down the role of Ray Kinsella in “Field of Dreams,” Andy Dufresne in “The Shawshank Redemption” and the lead role in “Jerry Maguire.”

re Matt...he's usually right on, it was just a small slip. I love him because he sent me an email once. (OK, me and 10,000 others registered for the ONE campaign.)

Sometimes I think George Clooney should be the only celebrity allowed to speak out on politics. ;)

Jamie Lee Curtis, Jake's godmother, writes occasional pieces for Huffington Post. (You know that Naomi emails them to Jake.)
JLC is not exactly Nora Ephron, but what she has to say is usually good. Kudos to her for at least speaking out. I also love her let-the-hair-go-grey, this-is-the-true-me stance. Go Jamie.

They plan to re-release TDK for Oscar push.

Unlikely the film itself will garner Oscar nods other than in special effects and categories like that, but I bet Heath will get a nom. There might be a backlash, though - so much praise inevitably brings out naysayers.

Many people think he was robbed for Best Actor in BBM (I certainly do), and he is generally loved by the acting community, directors, etc. - even my old fart colleagues who frown on any drug except whiskey think he was an actor with a couple of amazing achievements and unlimited potential - so maybe this will be his year. :( and :)

Anonymous said...

4:20 Yeah, I'm afraid of that too. I though TDK was really good and by god, if movies like Titanic and Juno were nominated then Nolan's film should be as well. But Titanic happened 11 years ago when the AA didn't have the attitude towards the blockbusters they have now. Juno otoh is an indie and AA loves them a lot. So slim changes for Best Picture nod.

Heath will probably be nominated for Best Supporting Actor but I don’t know about winning. I really doubt there’s going to be a performance in that category better than the Joker, but we all know how the AA is. barf!

Philip Seymour Hoffman has semi-rebutted some of the rumors he'll play Penguin in the next film (Michael Caine, who fueled the talk, seems like a loose canon but he is playing the role of waters-tester for the studio). Yet it would be interesting to see HK's Joker followed by PSH's Penguin. Esp if Heath wins the Oscar that PSH (through no fault of his own) robbed him of. Small world, Hollywood.

NEW YORK (Sept. 10) -- A smooth-talking Italian businessman who dated actress Anne Hathaway and claimed to have friends in high places at the Vatican is headed to prison after pleading guilty Wednesday in a Manhattan real estate fraud case.

Raffaello Follieri will serve more than four years in prison for his plea to wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy.

Prosecutors have said the 30-year-old Follieri posed as the Vatican's representative to the U.S., telling investors that the Roman Catholic church would sell him property at a steep discount.

Authorities said he took their money and spent up to $6 million - much of it on his jet-set lifestyle.

Prosecutors said Follieri was a sophisticated con man who went to elaborate lengths to carry out his scam and then spent his ill-gotten gains to fly across the world in a private jet with his celebrity girlfriend and to live a life of luxury at his Manhattan penthouse overlooking Rockefeller Center and Central Park.

The FBI arrived at Follieri's doorstep weeks after his split with Hathaway, the "Get Smart" and "The Devil Wears Prada" star.

According to the FBI, Follieri claimed the Vatican had formally appointed him to manage its financial affairs and that he had even met with the pope in person in Rome. His actual connections to the Vatican were slim, including his hiring of a relative of a former Vatican official.

Prosecutors allege that Follieri was so intent on carrying out the Vatican ruse that he kept ceremonial robes, including the robes of senior clergymen, in his Manhattan office.

Follieri's scheme fell apart after an investor sought an audit of the partnership.

Follieri's corruption appears to have touched people at high levels, including supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle. A division of Burkle's Yucaipa Cos. has settled lawsuits accusing Follieri of misappropriating more than $1 million. Burkle is a close friend of former President Clinton.

And the Camden Diocese says the bishop there received a call from the office of the Secretary of State at the Vatican, who boasted of the work the Follieri organization did in developments that benefited the church. While Follieri may not have had the church backing he allegedly told investors he did, the Camden Diocese's experience suggests that at least one official inside the Vatican was willing to help Follieri.

The Vatican has declined to comment on Follieri's case, citing the ongoing U.S. probe.

Hathaway was once on the board of the Follieri Foundation, but her publicist has insisted that she no longer serves in that capacity and is not part of any probes.

The Dark Knight

Review by Emily Blunt

Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and so on
Directed by: The Pompous Christopher Nolan

Bluntly Speaking? The Dark Knight is a big summer blockbuster rich in characters. But like any rich treat, it too gets a bit overwhelming and you find your self wishing for a break before it's finished. Heath Ledger is fabulous as The Joker. He brings an alarming edge to the villain. But if he gets an Academy Award (as the winds of brouhaha are whipping about the town) it’s because they blew it before with all his finer works. He’s good but not golden statue good. God bless him.

Truth is, as a film, it's a tad bat-in-the-storm-gutter bloated and has a rising scent of guano. There's just a confusingly twirling plot and those oh-so-done action scenes to pre-recorded action music. And it’s very dark – as in lit – not mentally. Bruce is a semi-pussy and you find yourself waiting for The Joker to re-energize the canvas between Wayne's whining or pining.

Nolan’s no Burton in direction of the avante garde comicbook adaptations. Personally, I think he got lucky with Batman Begins. Sure the new Joker is much more frightening than the last (by Jack Nicholson) and Two-Face is more down-to-Earth than the last (Tommy Lee Jones in Joel Schumacher’s forgettable attempt Batman Forever). But in this turn at the spin – hype aside – the big dark hued bat ballad is just a bang-it-up summer movie that will be savored for Ledger’s fantastic finale and nothing more.

Story goes… The Batman aka Bruce Wayne (aka Christian Bale) is having relationship issues and Gotham City troubles. A new crime-infused joker (pardon the pun) has decided the city, “Needs a better quality of villain.” And this one’s got no other switch but full-throttle maniacal.

The local syndicate bosses are being offered The Joker’s services. And after a few examples of his, um, talents (and violent outbursts that shock even they), the mob finds them selves in a position of employer.

The bad guys quickly learn, as does Batman (though he has to be told in a Nolan-brothers' scripted character flaw), this ultra-bad guy Joker chap has no monetary drive. He’s in the crime biz for the buzz. Um, didn't Bruce spend all that time learning these things somewhere in the mystic east? Yet, here he's just flabbergasted by The Joker's big blue pulsing forehead vein of cruelty.

That cruel streak's not so good for The Joker's would-be victims neither. Oh, and the dude is actually insane. No storing the mask and cleaning up for Chablis-filled evening soirees among the normals for this loony. The Joker is like a rabid dog hell-bent on the postman's calf-meat.

Gotham’s also got another do-gooder on there cityscape horizon. It's District Attorney Harry Dent (Aaron Eckhart). He’s not afraid of crime and grime and Batman’s smitten; in a, "Wow! Someone else cares about this place!" way. Bat’s ex, Rachel (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is also smitten with Dent - but in the traditional, "Let's get naked and rumble!" way. Some girls like the bad boys, this chickbabe seems to be drawn be the scent of self-sacrifice for the good of many.

Things excel quite as expected; fights get fought and things go boom. And, naturally, when the chips are down, Gotham’s citizens, once again, immediately turn against Batman…that’s so old. Will the Bat save the day? Um, what do you think?

Christian Bale is so very handsome and talented. Since adding super hero to his acting resume he’s just yummier. But here he’s a bit unused talent-wise. Nolan has him all pout-y faced and neurotic. Last time as we learnt what drove him batty it worked. Here Bruce is a bore.

Gary Oldman, who shows again as Gordon, is so generic American 24-hour cop you forget this lad was Sid and Dracula. Eckhart finally gets a meaty super-movie role after years in Indie-land. His two-face is wonderful and you get his anger…

The star of the film is Heath Ledger’s Joker. Not just because of the horrible tragedy the lad faced in real life. But because Ledger was an intense talent in anything he was cast in. A Knight’s Tale (which sucked), 10 Things I Hate About You which sucked, and Ned Kelly, Brokeback Mountain and so on. He and his being will be missed by this Ledger admirer both for his Andy Gibb-like looks and his not fully shared acting talents.

Snack recommendation: Nadda. It’s too hard to indulge in sweeties while your mind switches periodically to the fact that before you Mr. Ledger is performing his remarkable last hurrah.

The Dark Knight

[Emily Blunt is a lot of froth & fun. I don't agree that Nolan is pompous, though - he's just British. ;)]

It is a small world. LMAO @ the thought of PSH playing Penguin. I think he'd be great. If they do a third Batman, I hope they'll get him.
As for backlash for Heath, it would be a nightmare if he doesn't get nominated for an AA.

2) Michelle Williams- The Heath Ledger tragedy has really overshadowed the amazing progress Ms. Williams has made as an actress since the good ol' Dawson's Creek days. Wendy and Lucy only adds to this strong positive trend, and it's certainly not impossible that she could receive an Academy nomination for her work here.

Michelle AA nom?

Agreed. He doesn't need an Oscar to validate his brilliant performance. Look at how some actors have them yet a few years later people don't even remember the characters they played. Ennis and the Joker will stand the test of time.
You know, I never really liked Reese to begin with but her Oscar speech made me cringe. She wants us to think she's Little Miss Perfect when she's exactly the opposite. She's the epitome of fakery. I can't stand her.

...She describes herself prior to Cirque Lodge as “enormously co-dependent.” “I wasn’t taking care of myself emotionally. I wasn’t expressing my anger. I was making nice all the time. When you spend your entire life as a child actress, being told where to go and where to stand, you’re performing constantly for people. It definitely breeds the kind of person who’s dependent on other people’s approval. If I’d trusted myself and listened to myself all the times that I ignored myself, I would have been fine. But everyone has to learn their lesson, and now I’ve got it."

“Now,” she breathes, “I’m great.”

Women, she believes, have an especially hard time in the Hollywood pressure cooker. “I don’t buy the rag mags, but I was looking at the cover of one, and an actress’s husband apparently had cheated on her. Who knows if it’s true? But they don’t put the guy on the cover, going, Look at what this guy did. They put the girl on the cover, going, Look at what he did to her. That is the stuff that I have no tolerance for,” Kirsten explains firmly. “Guys will go do this, that, and the other and they’re cool, and girls will go out with their friends and do this and it’s ‘horrendous.’ If a guy’s flirting with me, I’m the slut. It can kill a girl’s spirit.”

If Kirsten sounds like a therapist, that’s her furthest goal. “I just want to be a good friend to people, that’s all,” she says. With that in mind, she’s trying to form a grassroots organization to help women discuss their problems. She considers Samantha Ronson’s reported relationship with Lindsay Lohan, for instance, a positive influence on teenagers. “I’m sure there are a lot of girls out there who are so much more comfortable because they love Mean Girls and Lindsay’s dating a girl,” Kirsten says. “I think that couldn’t be better. I know them enough to know that, deep down, they’re both sweet girls.”...

Am I the only one who likes Kiki? Everyone goes on and on about how messed up she is and how good it's for Jake that they broke up. IA. Kiki is authentic in her messed-up way, and yes, a zillion times better than Reese. I like that she questions things. And doesn't spew empty platitudes like Reese. THE DARK KNIGHT star AARON ECKHART loves talking to kids about his role in the BATMAN film - because they want to know all about working with the late HEATH LEDGER.
The actor feels he's doing his bit to promote his tragic co-star's legacy every time he tells a bunch of eight year olds what the Joker was really like.
He tells WENN, "To talk about Heath is fun for me to do; because of his unfortunate death he obviously isn't there to talk about his character and the fun that he had making the movie and the kids would've really wanted to hear what Heath had to say so it's fun to talk to them about his character."
And Eckhart loves the fact he now has an army of young fans: "Kids recognise me more. I get fan mail from eight year olds, which I really enjoy because the movies I've done in the past haven't reverberated too much with the kids.
"I was taking photographs of fishermen on the pier in Manhattan Beach, California the other day and I was taking pictures of this one kid and he looked at me and goes, 'Two Face.' The guy couldn't believe that Two Face was taking his picture, fishing on a pier.
"I always try to talk with them and answer all their questions. It's fun for me to talk to kids about the make-up and to talk about Batman and the suit and the car."

Aaron

To me Aaron, Gary Oldman and Michael Caine were the most genuine in their praise for Heath.

Christian Bale is a loner and always very controlled and formal in his interactions with press (maybe people, too), but he seemed to have developed a real relationship with Heath. They had a lot in common - total-immersion acting style, being non-Americans in a US-dominated industry, young daughter they adore.

“You know, I don’t like kind of trivializing the tragedy in conjunction with an interview to do with the movie, which is clearly far less important. But Heath was a joy,” the actor tells Entertainment Weekly. “He really was like that, because he was a very unique man. I enjoyed watching him work, working with him.”

Bale, who plays Batman opposite Ledger’s Joker, says that he appreciated his costar’s professionalism and dedication to the comic book tale.

“What was so great to see with Heath is just how seriously he took it,” says Bale. “And we don’t mean in any way to sound sort of pretentious with that, but just in the fact that if we don’t take it seriously, then how can any audience ever take it seriously? And he did one hell of a job.”

After watching a recent Warner Bros. presentation with clips from the film, which hits theater July 18, Bale added, “It gave me goose bumps throughout, looking at Heath up there. And I just hope that this can celebrate him, celebrate his work.”

I think from Bale this is the equivalent of loud whoops and cheers.

Back in May 2007...

During a roundtable for Rescue Dawn, IESB questioned him about his next stint as Batman. Of course, he wasn't a flowing tap of information, but he did say a little bit about his new nemesis -- The Joker.

According to Bale, he is looking forward to Heath Ledger as the joking fiend: "He is a great choice for it. I like it, personally." While he isn't too descriptive about what Ledger will do with the role, Bale does say: "Heath has a really crazy take for playing that role. He's going to do something really different with it."

Christian Bale has opened up about his The Dark Knight co-star Heath Ledger who died after the film wrapped. "I want to talk about Heath," Bale tells the upcoming issue of Parade magazine. "When you miss somebody, you want to speak about him."

"He was a unique character, a very infectious character. He was a good man, and I was glad to have spent time with him. He was somebody who I’d been seeing on a daily basis for months," Bale says in Parade. "It takes a long time to accept that someone’s gone, when all body and mind are telling you that this is somebody you will know for a great deal of time. He was something of a kindred spirit to myself."

Why has Bale chosen to openly discuss such a painful loss?

"Much of it has to do with my respect for his daughter, whom he loved so dearly and whom he would talk about so often. For me, that is of incredible importance."

That was in Parade magazine, June 25 2008

^ re Christian Bale, my newspaper today has a Giorgio Armani ad featuring "Bruce Wayne."

I guess Bale's mom-smackdown didn't wreck his reputation completely. :)

I think TDK's success overshadowed this little scandal.
He looks good in the ad, btw.

He does.

Weird that Bale's closest competition for the role of Batman was Jake.

"Q: What did you think of Christian Bale? Had you met him before?

GOYER: We were torn between Bale and Jake Gyllenhaal, because we wanted to go in a different direction. But I think Bale at the end… I loved Jake, but Bale just seemed the right way. Knowing the story that we're telling… It's hard for everyone else because they don't know the story that we're telling, but it ultimately was the right way to go. And Michael Caine, I was just freaking out when we got Michael Caine. And all of the other casting has been, you know, I had a very schizophrenic experience on the project, because I was a professional doing a job crafting, sort of reinventing Batman with Chris, being very aware of how f***ed up the previous movies were. And being very conscious of the fact that we didn't want to let the fans down. But at the same time, I was like a fan going, 'Holy s**t, I can't believe they're going to let us do this.'

Hey you nice, open-minded individuals (is there anyone here?),
Politics is a minefield, but if film critic Roger Ebert wades in, can we post it here, for curiosity's sake?

*is embarrassed*

Due to my endless intelligence *sarcasm* I’ve somehow managed to delete this blog from my Google account and try as I might it can’t be fixed. Long story short I’m unable to run this blog so if you guys are still interested we’re going to have to move camp to here

The new blog is practically the same and it has the same “rules” - anything can be discussed there, especially Heath.

The old five leaves will stay up for about a week and then it will be deleted.

Sorry.

Jake is too young for the role i think!

Talking about him , i's make me smile to see so much criticism on him and yet i am not his biggest fan.
He obviously don't play the script some wanted, accept it or leave him , not the end of the world.LOL

Sorry I guess i am tired to see his name here it's not the purpose of this site, is it? please reassure me, I just believed for one second reading some comments, I was on WFT3.

I miss heath terribly and i feel a bit desesperate not to be able to get over his death.
